There are currently six research groups at the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics. Their research focuses on investigation of structure and dynamics in soft condensed matter and bio inspired systems, using a variety of experimental, simulation based and theoretical methods.

We investigate the molecular dynamics of long-range disordered systems. What is the relationship between this dynamics and the local structure? What influence do internal interfaces have?

Radiation Biophysics (Prof. Durante)

How does ionizing radiation affect soft matter? The multidisciplinary research in our group covers many different topics which can be roughly summarized in the categories radiobiology, physics, space research and therapy. Dr. Durante heads the biophysics department at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt and holds a professorship at the Department of Physics at the TU Darmstadt.

Soft Matter at Interfaces (Prof. von Klitzing)

The group works in the area of phases and interfaces. The focus is on interactions in thin liquid films and at the air/water interface. Another main topic is responsive soft matter such as polyelectrolyte multilayers, polymer brushes and hydrogels.

Theory of Soft Matter (Prof. Liebchen)

How can soft matter systems be modeled and descibed from a physics perspective? One approach is to combine particle based computer simulations with theoretical techniques. The group, i.a. derives, analyzes and simplifies field equations for active matter using tools from nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics.

Our research is focused on the physics and self-assembly of biomolecular soft matter. With the help of x-ray/neutron scattering and complementary methods we investigate soft matter of biological or biotechnological relevance.

Hybrid Quantum Systems (Urbaszek Group)

We investigate optical and electronic properties of quantum states in different material systems. Research areas include 2D materials, semi-conductor nano-structures and developments in optical spectroscopy and microscopy, with applications in photonics and quantum technologies.

Molecular Dynamics of Condensed Matter (Prof. Vogel)

We ascertain structure and dynamics of condensed matter, including simple liquids, soft matter, as well as crystalline and amorphous solids. Goal of our studies is to gain a complete understanding of macroscopic behaviors based on the microscopic structures and dynamics.
